In 2020, Jacqui was diagnosed with invasive lobular breast cancer. A successful business woman with her own physiotherapy practice, I’ve known Jacqui for 15 years. This news came as a horrendous shock.
Quite early on in her diagnosis, Jacqui had a single mastectomy. After a catalogue of challenges with implants she decided against reconstruction. This is when Jacqui asked if she could commission me to document her cancer journey as she felt she could trust me implicitly.
I photographed Jacqui three times over an 18 month time frame. First was on a very cold day in January 2021. Second was in July 2021 and thirdly in October 2022. By the second photoshoot Jacqui had started writing her story – with the aim to write and publish a book. By the third photoshoot Jacqui had retrained to be a yoga instructor and her book was due to be published. Each time the photographs I took built on her personal story and in the last photoshoot I took photos for her new yoga venture and book launch.
I have chosen a selection of images that show Jacqui’s vulnerability, determination and strength. More personal photos can be seen in her brand new book launched today, “The Space Between – Breast cancer and finding me”.
